2007 Directory of Indiana Storytellers
The Directory of Indiana Storytellers is compiled annually by Storytelling Arts of Indiana, an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit organization that promotes the art and use of storytelling in everyday life.
The Directory includes the names of Indiana storytellers, organizations and events. Event and organization listings are free. Storytellers pay a fee to be included in the Directory. Anyone interested in being part of the Directory of Indiana Storytellers should visit the contact page.
How To Use This Directory
This directory is provided as a service to aid individuals and/or organizations in the process of selecting and hiring Indiana storytellers. The storytellers are arranged alphabetically by last name. Each teller has provided a description of their repertoire, their usual audiences and any special programs they offer.
After reading through the directory, select several storytellers who seem to fit your needs. Contact the tellers by phone. The tellers will be glad to talk to a prospective sponsor about a storytelling performance. Items that need to be discussed during the phone conversation include: the date, the time, location of the performance, type of performance space, the audience size and age range, length of program, availability of a sound system, types of stories or theme of the program and budget.
The people in this directory are all professional storytellers, and do expect to be compensated for their performances. While storytellers do perform pro bono, it is usually for people or organizations they are personally involved with and want to support.
Finally, ask the teller for references, where you can see them perform, and then take the time to see them tell stories. There is no substitute for first-hand knowledge of a storyteller's style, technique and ability.
