Bill Harley: Life is Not a Board Game

G C Cristo, NUVO

five stars out of five

"Every seat in the Indiana History Center was filled on Saturday night as Bill Harley took to the stage with his guitar in hand. A master musician and storyteller, Harley shared stories of the bygone days of his youth in Indiana and Connecticut, sprinkling the performance with a veritable soundtrack from the music of the era." Disquieting, Disturbing & Dreadful Tales

Celestine Bloomfield, Cynthia Changaris, Lou Ann Homan and Bob Sander

GC Cristo, NUVO

four stars out of five

"It was a cool and cloudless October eveing, which only heightened the suspense and sharpened the senses of audience members. One by one, the raconteurs shared frightening tales pass down to them through generations of family, friends and folkore. These stories ranged in subject matter from an account of a cursed rat given as a gift by the devil himself to a talke of a woman's truly undyling love for her husband." Read the entire review.

Bil Lepp

Lou Harry, Indianapolis Business Journal

“Bil Lepp – think Jeff Foxworthy with the comedic patience of Bill Cosby – held a packed house in rapt attention on Feb. 16 at the Indiana Historical Society. Veterans of past Storytelling arts of Indiana presentations tell me that Lepp, a five-time West Virginia Liars Contest champ, had told some of these tall-ish tales here before, but they enjoyed hearing them just as much this time.” Read the entire review.

Donald Davis

Josefa Beyer, NUVO

four stars out of five

“Now in his 60s, master storyteller Donald Davis recalls growing up in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with richly detailed comic stories that reveal life’s universal truths: that boys are mischievous and thoughtless; that mothers tend to nag, but ultimately are your greatest source of protection; and that grandmothers love you just as you are, and even more after you have consumed homemade pastries fried in real butter. In a dress shirt and bow tie, the slight Davis alternately clasps his hands in front of his chest and shakes them out beyond the microphone, while shifting his weight from foot to foot……” Read the entire review.

David Gonzalez

Carey Shea, NUVO

four stars out of five

"Storyteller David Gonzalez entwined reality and myth, taking an eager audience with him last Saturday night. His unique brand of storytelling fused his own personal history seamlessly with the legends that he shared. First he gave life to the Greek myth of Orpheus. Gonzalez scatted and hummed as the horn player, bringing new music to the old story." Read the entire review.

Andy Offutt Irwin

Lisa Gauthier, NUVO

five stars out of five

"About halfway through the first part of the show, a woman’s cell phone went off. Andy Offutt Irwin stopped mid-sentence, tore pell-mell up the auditorium stairs to the row the woman was sitting in, stretched his long arm out, pointing at the woman, and proclaimed in a resonant voice, “THE ACCUSED!” I think this impromptu act got as many laughs as the prepared material, but given that Irwin’s session was mostly about his Aunt Marguerite, the woman who taught him the three principal rules of practical jokes, it seemed apropos." “Moving my imaginary Barclay lounger from tent to tent for five hours, I indulged in more comedy than can possible be good for me, plus the occasional pulling of the heartstrings..." Read the entire review.
